To avoid incoming mail overload - have a trashcan near your door that you enter
after retrieving your mail.
Filter out all the junk mail (as long as it doesn't contain any of your
personal info) into the trash, and it will greatly reduce the amount of paper
coming into your home.

To try to protect yourself (as much as possible) from Identity Theft - SHRED,
SHRED, SHRED!
Get a good
shredder (it doesn't have to be the most expensive model, but some of the
cheaper ones tend to jam up or break easily), and use it frequently
Anything that you don't need to save for filing or action, SHRED IT, especially
if it has any identifying info about you (name, address, account numbers, etc.)
When ordering new checks from your bank, tell the bank to keep your new checks
there for you to pick up. It's not as convenient as having them mailed to you,
but it's much easier than dealing with identity theft and potentially massive
financial woes, once thieves have helped themselves to your mail. (I'm speaking
from personal experience here.)
